California man attempting to kill spider sets apartment on fire

A man who tried to kill a spider by setting it alight accidentally started an apartment fire after the burning arachnid reportedly ran under a mattress.

Fire officials say they found a fire extinguisher and hose at the scene, showing the residents attempted to extinguish the fire. Wolf spiders are venomous insects that have hairy bodies and can be more than 1-inch long.

Wisegarver said they were thinking about moving for some time now and the spider incident sped up that process.

"And it was such an interesting comment that it grew legs and spread like wildfire", he said, adding that the fire department's investigation remains ongoing.

Wisegarver and the two other men living in the apartment escaped the blaze unharmed, but will have to find a new home.

"Call an exterminator if you have spiders. and don't try to burn them", Redding Firefighters advised.

They should be considered unsafe to humans and the bite may be very painful. The bites of a North American wolf spider can be painful but harmless.
