Earlier, a news report had suggested that a "secret" meeting between Pakistan's National Security Advisor retired Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua and India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had taken place on December 27 in Thailand.

Mr Kumar said, terror and cross border terrorism were the focus of the talks.

"The spokesperson stated that Doval and Janjua also dwelled upon on how terrorism" terrorism should not affect "this region" in their "operational-level talks". The spokesperson, however, made it clear that this should not be construed as dilution of India's position that talks and terror can not go together.

"India and Pakistan have a dialogue process. However, there are other dialogue mechanisms like at the DGMO level or between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers", Kumar said.

Pakistan has maintained high-level diplomatic contacts with the Indian establishment, an Indian Express report said on January 3.

The Spokesperson said that the NSA-level metings were part of an "operational-level dialogue" similar to the talks that are held between the DGMOs of both sides and between the border forces of two countries.

The meeting took place in Bangkok on December 26, a day after ex-Indian Navy official Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav, who is languishing in Pak custody, met his mother and wife in Islamabad.

Kumar also stated that these operational-level mechanisms do take place.

He highlighted that during the meeting of over two hours New Delhi raised the issue of the infiltration of separatist militiamen from across the border. This is the second time in two years the two NSA met in Bangkok, the last time being in December 2015.

Another problem addressed was the recent release in Pakistan of Hafiz Saeed, mastermind of the terrorist attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008, causing over 160 deaths.
