European football's governing body's official website announced the group, assembled in a fantasy Team of the Year, drawing on 8.8 million votes from fans worldwide.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, European champions Real Madrid dominated the UEFA Team of the Year shortlist with 11 nominees, as the Premier League continued to lag behind their Spanish rivals.

There was no place for Europe's top scorer for club and country Harry Kane, or Neymar, the world's most expensive player at £200 million.

In midfield, Kevin De Bruyne received the most votes with 52.2%, accompanied by Real duo Luka Modric, who got 48.5%, and Toni Kroos with 43.3%.

At 39-years-old, Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon extends his record as the oldest player to make the team while the only other Serie A player included is team-mate Giorgio Chiellini. Sergio Ramos received the most votes with 588,315.
