Trump claimed he had scrapped the visit because he didn't want to open the new USA embassy in the British capital, but Khan suggested the real reason was because he wouldn't be welcome.

Meanwhile, there was some criticism of Mr Trump describing the new location of the U.S. embassy as "off-location"; its current home is in the heart of the West End in Grosvenor Square and is being moved to improve security.

The decision to move the embassy from Grosvenor Square to Nine Elms was made in 2008 under George W. Bush, not Obama.

U.S. President Donald Trump canceled his trip to Britain, amid what experts say are fears that locals will mount massive protests, U.S. experts told Xinhua.

Under domestic pressure, British Prime Minister Theresa May said Trump's re-tweeting was wrong, triggering the latter's retort demanding her not to focus on him, but on anti-terrorism efforts in her own nation.

Some U.K. lawmakers had said Trump was not welcome in Britain after he re-tweeted videos from a far-right British group and criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan following a terror attack previous year.

Last night British officials said the visit was canned for "personal reasons" after a series of perceived slights.

Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for "peanuts", only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars.

Asked about the PM's views on south London after the president described the embassy's new site as an "off location", the Number 10 spokesman said: "I think Vauxhall is a vibrant and important part of London and home to many businesses".

"Security concerns after 11 September meant we had to move to a location that could better protect American citizens and our British neighbours", Johnson wrote. She suggested a formal visit could still, but offered no details.

The snub, reported by the Daily Mail, would be the second blow to Mr Trump and the UK's relationship.

May rebuked Trump in November after he retweeted unverified anti-Muslim videos from the far-right Britain First political group.

"His visit. would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests", Khan said.

Former UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, who has been mainly supportive of Trump's presidency, said he was disappointed by the cancellation.

His comments sparked criticism from Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who accused the Mayor of London of endangering the so-called "special relationship".

Mr Johnson tweeted at about 11am: "The US is the biggest single investor in the United Kingdom - yet Khan & Corbyn seem determined to put this crucial relationship at risk".
