Katie Couric commented on Matt Lauer's behavior

One person who has remained mum on the situation was Lauer's former, "partner in crime", Katie Couric.

'Matt was a kind and generous colleague who treated me with respect.

"The late-night show joke which Couric describes is whether she explained View Everything occurs Live with Andy Cohen in 2012 that Lauer could "pinches me to the buttocks a lot". News conducted an investigation of a Lauer colleague's detailed complaint of "inappropriate sexual behavior".

When the stories about Lauer broke in November, Couric did not initially comment, breaking her silence for the first time in an interview with People yesterday.

Still, the entire situation is "very upsetting" to Couric, and although she's still unsure how to fully process Lauer's actions, she's optimistic about the future of Today.

The 61-year-old journalist, who worked alongside Lauer for 15 years before leaving NBC for CBS in 2006, said she was completely unaware of the disgraced anchor's alleged indiscretions-which included forcible sexual assault.

Lauer apologized in a statement a day later. "I think not everything has to be for public consumption these days", she told ET - also praised current Today co-hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb for how they've handled Lauer's scandal on-air.

"The accounts I've read and heard have been disturbing, distressing and disorienting and it's completely unacceptable that any woman at the Today show experienced this kind of treatment", Couric stated. "I've been doing a lot of thinking, I've been having a lot of conversations with people, and I've been doing a lot of reporting, to understand what steps can be taken to create a safer work environment for all of us". As I am writing this, I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. In December, Couric said the claims were "upsetting" but that she would only speak when she was "ready".

"I think that we need to continue to have the conversation".

Couric also touted her upcoming Nat Geo documentary, an episode of which will deal with harassment women face in the workplace.
