News of the subpoena came on the same day that Bannon testified before the House Intelligence Committee about what he witnessed when he worked on the Trump campaign between August 2016 and November 2016.

But the pair had a bitter public falling out over comments Mr Bannon made to author Michael Wolff for his recent book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House".

But sitting White House officials rarely appear before the congressional panels investigating Russian Federation meddling, making Hicks' appearance even more significant - especially given her ties to the President. Six days later, Bannon stepped down from his post as executive chairman at Breitbart News.
