A secessionist movement in California has announced plans for a "CalExit" which would split the state in two.

Previously, proposals to split the state of California have included the effort to divide the state into six, others have suggested combining parts of the state with OR to create the new state of Jefferson. "With God as our witness, honoring the foundational principles, we take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or goal of evasion, to stand together as free citizens of New California, to be a sovereign state of that nation which we hold dear, the United States of America".

Draper was quoted by the New York Times saying, "No one can argue that California's government is doing a good job governing or educating or building infrastructure for its people, and it doesn't matter which party is in place".

Members of the New California State movement have also proposed a flag from Sutter County which has been posted on their website. "High taxes, education, you name it, and we're rated around 48th or 50th from a business climate and standpoint".

New California would include most of the rural parts of the state, but not most of the coastal cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The New California movement claims to have sub-committees in 21 of the state's 58 counties, and estimate that it will take "10 to 18 months" before they are ready to approach the California state legislature to request a formal separation, CBS reports.
