China Rejects US Revision of Nuclear Strategy

China's Defence Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said that the U.S. document presumptuously speculated about the intentions behind China's development and played up the threat of China's nuclear strength, reports PTI.

In the United States review of nuclear policy released on Friday, the first one since 2010, the Pentagon said China had pursued new nuclear capabilities and challenged USA interests in the Western Pacific.

In his own statement, Trump said the updated strategy develops capabilities so that use of a nuclear weapon is less likely.

"As in the times of the Cold War, we in Europe are especially endangered" by "a renewed nuclear arms race", Gabriel said.

"What we're trying to do is ensure that our diplomats and our negotiators are in a position to be listened to when we say we want to go forward on nonproliferation and arms control", Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters ahead of the review's release Friday.

The United States' so-called nuclear triad - the military's ability to launch and defend nuclear attacks with land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and air-launched cruise missiles - will remain critical to its nuclear deterrence strategy. The United States, the country that owns the world's largest nuclear arsenal, should take the initiative to follow the trend instead of going against it.

The NPT, which came into force in 1970 and has been signed by nearly all countries including the United States, calls on nations "to achieve at the earliest possible date the cessation of the nuclear arms race and to undertake measures in the direction of nuclear disarmament".
