Adam Lallana to escape Liverpool first-team ban after U23s red card

Lallana and Tottenham captain George Marsh, 19, collided while contesting for a ball in the air in the 63rd minute, and the Liverpool man took exception to the challenge.

Jurgen Klopp was reluctant to play the England worldwide against Spurs on Sunday and Lallana was instead named for the clash between the two sides' youngsters.

The midfielder was stepping up his recovery from injury by taking part in the match in Premier League 2, when he was involved in an aerial challenge with Marsh, which seemed inconspicuous.

Lallana lost a header to Marsh, and the Liverpool midfielder felt the youngster had led with his arm.

"I've never seen Adam react like that", said Liverpool manager Neil Critchley. A pre-season thigh problem kept him sidelined for some time, meaning the 29-year-old has only made one start in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool also had George Johnston dismissed in the 1-0 defeat, in which first-teamers Dominic Solanke and Danny Ings also featured.
