One reason for skepticism is that Nunes's central claim - the Federal Bureau of Investigation improperly obtained a warrant to spy on Donald Trump's presidential campaign - contradicts previous assertions by Trump and his communications team that the target of the warrant, Carter Page, was not really a member of the campaign. President Trump himself cited the FBI's harsh treatment of Clinton as a reason to fire then-FBI Director James Comey.

The video clip tweeted by Scott Dworkin, an MSNBC contributor and founder of the anti-Trump Democratic Coalition, surfaced after Page said during an interview Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that he has never had any communication with Trump.

"There was a lot of people advising", Page asserted.

"Now that a few of the misdeeds against the Trump Movement have been partially revealed, I look forward to updating my pending legal action in opposition to DOJ this weekend in preparation for Monday's next small step on the long, potholed road toward helping to restore law and order in our great country". Page's profile on his firm's website touts his experience with Merril Lynch in Russia, saying he was an adviser "on key transactions" with the top Russian oil and electricity companies. "I never spoke with him any time in my life", Page said when asked by ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos. The letter in which Page's own words appear was recently obtained by TIME.

Page didn't deny any of the facts, but tried to downplay his Russian Federation connections.

Podobny, protected from prosecution by diplomatic immunity, has returned to Russian Federation.

Page's Russian contacts first drew the FBI's interest in 2013 and he was interviewed about his contacts with a Russian intelligence officer. He told Fox News he was in Hawaii at the time. McClatchy reported a year ago that in 2008, the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan sent a cable to the U.S. State Department describing how Page had met with government officials in the country, which was formerly part of the Soviet Union, about possibly working for their oil companies. And he actually said he was a very low-level member of I think a committee for a short period of time.

"I just came to see him as a kook", the editor says.
