To The Intercept, she described a time in which Porter had physically dragged her from the shower to continue an argument, saying, "I think he saw the look on my face, and immediately released me and apologized".

She also wrote a blog post detailing the abuse she said she suffered.

He dramatically changed his tune on Wednesday after Porter resigned. Multiple sources told Axios that Porter resigned of his own volition, which press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed at today's daily press briefing.

"These outrageous allegations are simply false", he said in his statement.

Mr Porter said photos published of his former spouses were taken almost 15 years ago and did not tell the complete story.

But the press had many questions for Sanders. Hatch's office provided the statement to the White House - at its request - before the Daily Mail story was published.

Willoughby, who married Porter in 2009, alleges that he violated their separation agreement in 2010 visiting her residence and punching a window. Later that year, Willoughby filed a protective order against Porter after he wouldn't leave their apartment. The police were called and Porter allegedly shattered a door window. Earlier on Wednesday, Sanders said that the White House would not comment on whether Porter was granted a security clearance for his position, which involved handling information read by the president. He was supposed to be the West Wing's resident grown-up, but staffers are increasingly questioning Kelly's judgment, four Republicans close to the White House told me. Then, on Tuesday, the paper contacted the White House with questions about Porter's alleged battery.

The DailyMail.com published a statement from Mr Kelly referring to Mr Porter as a, "man of true integrity and honour and I can't say enough good things about him".

Though relatively unknown to the mainstream public, Porter was a close aide to both Trump and chief of staff John Kelly.

She added that the president and White House chief of staff John Kelly "have full confidence" in Porter's abilities and performance. Kelly also encouraged Porter to "stay and fight" instead of walking away from his job.

Hatch's spokesman Matt Whitlock told The Hill that the senator spoke to Rob Porter at the White House today and urged him to get help so that he can serve in government in the future.

"I encouraged him to keep a stiff upper lip and work out his problems", Hatch told reporters, according to CBS News.
