He dramatically changed his tune on Wednesday after Porter resigned. Multiple sources told Axios that Porter resigned of his own volition, which press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed at today's daily press briefing.

"These outrageous allegations are simply false", he said in his statement.

Mr Porter said photos published of his former spouses were taken almost 15 years ago and did not tell the complete story.

But the press had many questions for Sanders. Hatch's office provided the statement to the White House - at its request - before the Daily Mail story was published.

Willoughby, who married Porter in 2009, alleges that he violated their separation agreement in 2010 visiting her residence and punching a window. Earlier on Wednesday, Sanders said that the White House would not comment on whether Porter was granted a security clearance for his position, which involved handling information read by the president. Then, on Tuesday, the paper contacted the White House with questions about Porter's alleged battery.

The published a statement from Mr Kelly referring to Mr Porter as a, "man of true integrity and honour and I can't say enough good things about him".
