While "Suicide Squad" star Jared Leto isn't reprising the role in this particular project, another Academy Award victor is poised to take over.

Joaquin Phoenix will play the iconic Batman villain the Joker in an upcoming movie about the antagonist's origins, various news outlets reported Thursday afternoon.

To be clear, this will be a wholly separate film from anything in the DCEU, including Suicide Squad and whatever Jared Leto is doing with the character in those series of film.

Phillips' film will be a DC Comics adaptation for Warner Brothers, but won't be part of the DCEU shared universe that Justice League and Suicide Squad are part of. Initial reports indicated that Phillips movie would be executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

Scott Silver is joining Todd Phillips as a co-writer on the film, which will dive into the Joker's backstory and the circumstances that led him to become a mastermind criminal. This now untitled origin story is said to take place in the 1980s and follow The Joker's rise as a crime lord in Gotham. The 43-year-old, multiple Oscar-winning actor would be a big get after the rumored first choice of Leonardo DiCaprio didn't come to pass.

Of all the Caped Crusader's enemies through the years, the Joker is by far the most well-known. As Christopher Nolan proved with his Dark Knight Trilogy, some DC characters have more than enough to them to hold up in their own universes. Sources speaking to Variety confirmed Phoenix agreed to the role, but Warner Bros. has declined to comment.

Joaquin Phoenix was also up to play Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman and Doctor Strange for Marvel, but passed on those roles.
