John Thomas said that El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Amon Kotey were captured in early January in eastern Syria. IS reportedly titled the video "A Second Message to America" in reference to the execution of journalist James Foley in August 2014.

Diane Foley said she is "grateful, really grateful" to learn about the capture of two Islamic State group members responsible for her son's death in Syria.

Meanwhile a United States defence official announced on Thursday that fellow Briton El Shafee el-Sheikh, another "Beatles" member, had also been captured by Syrian rebel forces.

By effectively washing its hands of the two men, Britain has left the way open for America, which is thought to already have the pair in custody in a USA special forces facility in adjoining Iraq, to decide on the manner of their disposal. "One of them is Alexanda Kotey", Redur Khalil, a spokesperson and senior official in the Syrian Democratic Forces told AFP.

The US official did not give any information on the condition of the two or what would happen to them.

Asked if they would be prosecuted and if so where they might face trial Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway said: "We are still considering options regarding el-Sheikh and Kotey, but rest assured our intention is to hold anyone accountable who commits acts like those they are alleged to have committed".

"Their crimes are beyond imagination", she said. "It doesn't bring James back, but hopefully it protects others from this kind of crime", she added.

USA officials believe the "execution cell" beheaded more than 27 Western hostages and tortured many more.

The two are believed to be linked to Mohammed Emwazi, the masked British insurgent known as Jihadi John who appeared in several videos that showed the beheading of Western hostages.

That victory was the doom of the jihadist proto-state, the last pockets of which were then retaken within weeks by the SDF and other forces in Iraq and Syria.

US officials did not provide any other details of the capture, but said the USA government works closely with its coalition partners on the disposition of detainees held by the SDF.

Bethany Haines, 20, whose aid worker dad David was executed on camera by Emwazi in 2014, said she hoped the pair's detention could bring some closure for relatives of their victims.

US officials say the cell is responsible for the capture, torture and beheading of more than two dozen hostages. Both Kotey and Elsheikh were named as wanted terrorists early past year by the US State Department.

Despite pleas to bring the jihadi butchers home to face British justice, Gavin Williamson said: "I don't think they should ever set foot in this country again".

Tobias Ellwood, a British defence minister, said yesterday the pair should face an global war crimes tribunal and not be sent to Guantanamo Bay as some have speculated will occur.

He said that so far the future of the detainees is undetermined and it's not clear what the process will be for bringing them to justice. Justice is just what I want.

But the broadsheet reported London would not hinder any moves to extradite the pair to the U.S. and there was little desire among ministers to repatriate them to Britain.

"What I'm looking for is justice and Guantanamo is a denial of justice", he told The Associated Press on Friday.
