The White House staff secretary who resigned following allegations of domestic abuse has put a spotlight on "incredibly common" patterns of violence against partners, experts say.

Principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah on Thursday called the allegations "troubling" and insisted White House officials took them seriously while suggesting that any missteps in their response were because the "emerging reports were not reflective of the individual who we had come to know". He was charming, in a boy next door kind of way, and everyone loved him; people have a hard time believing that he wasn't always so wonderful. Beginning after Kelly assumed his chief of staff role over the summer, he directed that all documents that Trump would see should be vetted by both him and Porter.

According to reports, he told congressional Democrats that the president was "uninformed" during the campaign when he promised a physical barrier spanning the entirety of the Southern border paid for by Mexico.

"Forty minutes later he was gone", Kelly said.

A photo of Holderness with a black eye, purportedly after an incident with Porter, also came to light this week, leaving many wondering why he remained in his high-profile post, who knew about the accusations and when were they made aware. "And literally that was it". But the president needs and trusts John Kelly, "said one of the two sources quoted by CNN on condition of anonymity who said he had spoken with Trump about the scandal".

As Porter's second ex-wife, Jennie Willoughby, illustrated to Anderson Cooper last night, this is more than just another political football for the administration to have a kick at.

But there was no sign that a move was imminent, according to the people with knowledge of the conversations.

Trump's administration has been beset by scandal and staff departures. He also said Porter had been "terminated", before later clarifying that he had resigned.

The official said White House counsel Don McGahn was apprised of at least some of the accusations about Porter at least four times, including as early as January 2017.

"He became fully aware about these allegations yesterday", said Shah. As The Washington Post reported this week, both Willoughby and Porter's first ex-wife had informed the Federal Bureau of Investigation about Porter's abusive behavior as part of his security clearance. More than 15 women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct.

Shah was asked questions about Trump's thoughts concerning legal immigration as it affects Indian immigrants, and those applying for Green Cards through the normal route, as well as on lifting the country quotas for legal immigration, News India Times daily reported.

For there to be "multiple White House aides" who won't clear the bar sounds alarming.

Pence said in an interview in South Korea that he was "appalled" by the allegations and that he would look into the matter when he got back to Washington.

The episode has thrust Trump's senior-most aides, many of whom have already been embroiled in controversy related to special counsel Robert Mueller III's Russian Federation investigation, into yet another crisis.

"That's like saying that axe murderer out there, he's a great painter", said former Vice-President Joe Biden.

Kelly went on to infuriate immigration advocates and Democratic lawmakers on February 6 when he said some young immigrants eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program had failed to apply for the legal protections because they were too afraid - or "too lazy to get off their asses".

Numerous commenters keyed in on Willoughby's description of the loneliness and isolation of abuse.
