Democrat Margaret Good defeated Republican James Buchanan by a 52-45 margin in a special election for Florida House District 72, marking the 36th state legislative seat Democrats have flipped since Donald Trump's election.

Backed by the Koch brothers' network's spending on television ads, Trump and Republicans have aggressively sold the tax plan by highlighting the $1,000 bonuses some businesses have handed out - contrasting that with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi's characterization of the plan as "the crumbs that they are giving to workers to kind of put the schmooze on".

Local polling gave Good a 3-point lead just days before the election, but that wasn't counting voters who already had cast ballots. They have targeted six counties to mine for votes, including Dallas County.

Tom Drews doesn't think the election is an indication of anything, and expects Republicans will field a winning candidate in November, when the District 72 seat comes up for re-election. Democratic voters break for their party, 85 percent to 5 percent, while Republicans similarly favor the GOP, 84 percent to 8 percent.

"There were people who voted for Margaret Good who voted for Donald Trump (two years ago)".

The race started off with many believing that Buchanan would be able to keep the seat in the GOP's column. "This is a referendum on Trump and the GOP".

Joe Gruters, the Sarasota County chair of the Republican Party, released a statement early Wednesday congratulating Good and Buchanan for their campaigns.

"Numbskulls!" --NASA: The Trump administration Wants to Privatize the International Space Station
Rumors about ending federal funding have circulated for some time, and The Washington Post reported on the plansover the weekend. But he's said he not convinced the industry could bear the financial burden of maintaining the space station by the mid-2020s.

Florida Republicans, forced to defend the seat Tuesday after Republican Rep. Alex Miller suddenly resigned past year, were prepared for Tuesday's loss and were dismissive of the significance of the results, which saw Good beat Buchanan by a 52 - 45 margin. Schale ran state House campaigns for Florida Democrats back in 2006 when there was a blue wave.

Unlike some other Trump-country victories for Democrats in recent weeks - including wins in Wisconsin and Missouri - the Florida contest was an intense battle. But if the GOP does end up having a broader problem with turnout, it could hurt them in the midterm elections.

The poll also reported that large majorities of voters have "serious concerns" about some of his advisers meeting with officials tied to the Kremlin at Trump Tower or Trump's interest in lifting sanctions against Russian Federation. In the midterms, it may just mean a lot of people won't vote. A high percentage for a special election.

Good's campaign got a major shot in the arm from the national Democratic push on her behalf, allowing her to raise more money than Buchanan. "So far in Republican House seats in these special (elections), that hasn't been the case".

In some districts, multiple well-funded Democrats are vying for the chance to take on a Republican incumbent.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll finds that 39 percent of likely voters would support a generic Republican candidate in November, while 38 percent would support a Democrat.
