Small quake that hit Britain was strongest for 10 years

Today's quake was the "biggest onshore United Kingdom event in 10 years" and 8 million times smaller than the magnitude 9.0 in Japan in March 2011, the BGS said.

The British Geographical Survey has been investigating the incident and reported the magnitude at 4.4 with a depth of 7.4km.

The British Geological Survey has confirmed the epicentre was about 20km north of Swansea in Wales.

Closer to the epicentre, James Leonard tweeted: "Wow was that an quake in Swansea my house just shook".

The quake's epicentre was 10km north east of Swansea, according to monitors EMSC. Police are asking people to only call if they are injured or if there are damages. "The dogs are not happy at all though", she said.
