Henry Bolton has lost the leadership of the United Kingdom Independence Party (Ukip) after party members backed a no confidence motion by 867 to 500 at an extraordinary general meeting in Birmingham. It's time for UKIP to focus on politics and Brexit and not private lives.

Mr Bolton said he still has "strong affections" for his former girlfriend who sent offensive messages about Meghan Markle, and compared the scrutiny of his private life to that faced by Diana, Princess of Wales.

The leader broke off the relationship saying the comments were indefensible but he has continued to be seen with her and has sidestepped questions about whether he intends to resume the relationship should he lose.

Prior to the motion, Henry Bolton said: "It's not about whether I go, specifically, it's about whether or not the party goes through another leadership contest and an interim leadership beforehand".

Outgoing party chairman Paul Oakden told delegates to remain faithful to the party regardless of the decision.

Mr Bolton hit out at the media interest following the breakdown of his marriage to Tatiana Smurova and his new relationship with Ms Marney.

Former army officer Bolton, 54, was not widely known outside the party when he became UKIP's fourth leader in a year in September.

Speaking after the result, Mr Bolton said he had not finished in politics and was "batting around" various options for the future.

"The alternative is for the party to carry on down the path of self-destruction into irrelevance".

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he says: "The basic structures of the party organisation are disappearing; branches are closing; and numerous sitting councillors in the forthcoming Spring elections wish to run as independents".

He also said he thought it was going to be very hard for the party to survive another leadership change.

Barrister Piers Wauchope said:"I am very pleased with the outcome".

Henry Bolton addresses a meeting in Canterbury, Kent.

"The people who started complaining about this were people on the NEC, none of whom voted for me in the leadership election", he said.

Mr Bolton - who told Sky News he was "quietly confident" ahead of the meeting - had been clinging on to the leadership after a revolt by several senior party figures over his relationship with model Jo Marney.

"Pffft. Bunch of muppets. I ain't going anywhere".
