U of L also will have to vacate victories between 2011 and 2015 and its 2012 Final Four appearance, and return to the NCAA at least $600,000 in postseason revenue. The statistics of players during that era also will be removed from record books.

David Glenn breaks down why the punishment handed to Louisville from the NCAA is yet another example of why the theory that NCAA is afraid of major programs doesn't hold up.

In the title game, the Wolverines fell to Louisville, 82-76, and the Cardinals were crowned National Champions. There's a Final Four banner hanging in Crisler Arena, and very well could be a National Championship banner had U-M gotten a few more breaks ... or had the NCAA done its job in the first place. The Cardinals won the 2013 NCAA tournament.

The NCAA made the announcement ahead of a Louisville press conference on Tuesday.

If Thamel's source is correct, the NCAA could be looking at many more upper-tier programs to investigate and sanction, and the precedent they set with Louisville will be important moving forward.

The NCAA announced Tuesday it has upheld its decision that Louisville must vacate its 2013basketball national title.

"I can not say this strongly enough: We believe the NCAA was simply wrong in this decision", Louisville interim president Greg Postel said.

In the Committee on Infractions' decision, the panel found that a former Louisville director of basketball operations acted unethically when he committed serious violations by arranging striptease dances and sex acts for prospects, student-athletes and others, and did not cooperate with the investigation.

So, less than five years later, the Dome has been imploded through no fault of its own, and Louisville's national title has gone up in smoke, too, through much fault of its own. No, it took an FBI investigation into corruption in college basketball that implicated Pitino and Louisville for the school to finally part ways with him. "Instead, it was ignored". Despite the decision to move on from the program's athletic leadership, the school did not agree with the decision. Multiple times he called what happened appalling, and though he said Louisville did everything in its power to fight, the NCAA has wide latitude on the penalties it hands down.

Though some of us have joked about this, one of the NCAA's arguments for not penalizing UNC was that the classes were available to all students, bogus though they were.
