Muir won gold in both the 1500m and 3,000m at the European indoor championships past year but faces stern opposition from Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba, the world record holder in both events.

Muir, who was beaten by Dibaba and Hassan in the 3000m, added: 'I was very close to silver in the 3000m so I knew I just had to go for it this time.

Muir clocked a season's best eight minutes and 45.78 seconds on Thursday and was thankful for the £1500 taxi ride after arriving in the Midlands less than 24 hours before her first race.

Eilidh Doyle got the evening session off to a winning start for Great Britain winning bronze over 400m with a great performance, while Zoey Clark finished sixth in her first individual world final.

She said: 'I thought if I could scrape a medal that would be great but to get a silver medal is better still.

"I thought if I could medal in one event it would be a great achievement".

"It's such a good confidence boost".

"I'm very happy to be indoor champion for the third time", said Dibaba.

Muir's achievements, although not gold, top Katarina Johnson-Thompson's pentathlon gold because of the strength of the respective fields.

But after over an hour of uncertainty - which saw Windle's case taken to a jury of appeal at the venue - the original result stood.

McColgan was disappointed with her 10th place in 9:01.32.

Dibaba never looked under real threat but Muir held Hassan off, in the same way the Dutch athlete did to her in beating her to silver in the 3,000m.

Running before home crowd, Great Britain poster girl Laura Muir will be another athlete capable of blighting Obiri's happiness. "I just tried my best to the end of the competition".

That is not to take anything from Doyle, however.

"Being so close to silver [in the 3,000m], after that race I knew I was in similar shape to Hassan and I could get the silver and beat her". "It was a good race for me". "It's not my preferred event so to do this is really incredible".

However CJ Ujah had a bad day - he was disqualified from the 60m semi-final for a false start.

Elsewhere, Great Britain's 4x400m teams both qualified second in their heats to reach the men's and women's final on Sunday, while in the women's 800m, Shelayna Oskan-Clarke clocked two minutes 01.76 seconds to reach the final as she looks to add to the European Indoor silver she won previous year.

Andrew Pozzi reached Sunday's 60m hurdles final when he qualified fastest in 7.53 seconds - a season's best - and he was joined by GB team-mate David King. I think this has prepared me so well for the Commonwealth Games as well. Those five or six-hundredths of a second could be crucial on Sunday.
