According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is working on noise-cancelling, over-ear headphones that will rival nose just Bose but Apple's own Beats brand. All Bloomberg noted is that Apple is planning to release them sometime before the end of 2018, though there's a chance the entire project could be scrapped between now and then.

There are plans to release the headphones as early as the end of this year, though challenges with development could delay the release, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

Apple has sold over-ear headphones since it acquired Beats in 2014 but has yet to release an Apple-branded pair.

Interestingly, the report says the headphones will bear the Apple logo.

Similar to development of the HomePod, work on the new headphones has been on and off over the past year.

With the AirPods being a massive success, Apple has plans to introduce a better iteration of the wireless earphones but it looks like the tech giant also wants to take on premium brands such as Bose.

Keep in mind that Apple's HomePod retails for $349, but for the company itself, it costs $216 to make, resulting in smaller margins.

Researcher NPD Group said previous year that sales of AirPods and Beats headphones gave Apple 27 percent of the wireless headphone market and nearly half the dollars spent on the category. On the contrary, the headphones are expected to follow the footsteps of AirPod and will feature a similar set of features as well. AirPods have been tricky to assemble and use unusual design tricks, likely making them expensive to produce.

Alongside noise-cancellation, Apple is also said to be incorporating the wireless pairing technology found on the AirPods.

Pricing will be key for the new Apple headphones.
