30 killed after truck carrying wedding guests in India swerves into riverbed

Almost 60 people were travelling in the open truck and most victims were women and children, local police officer K.J. Kadapda told AFP.

Initial investigations indicated the driver lost control causing the truck to swerve off the bridge and fall eight metres (26 feet) onto a dry riverbed in Gujarat state, police said.

The overturned and mangled truck after it fell off the bridge in Bhavnagar on Tuesday.

Vijay was travelling in another vehicle while his parents were with the relatives on the truck.

The chief minister also announced that the cost of treatment of all those injured would be borne by the state government. "Before we could realise anything, the truck fell down into the pit".

Five others lost their lives while undergoing treatment.

The injured have, meanwhile, been rushed to the hospital.

Rescue teams have reached the spot where the incident took place.

The chief minister expressed grief over the incident and prayed for the departed souls, it said. "May those who have been injured recover at the earliest", read his official Twitter handle.
