Democrats outnumber Republicans in early voting

Terry County Elections Administrator Krystal Valentin reported that 684 local residents made their way to the Annex to cast a ballot in two weeks of early voting, including 625 republicans and 59 democrats.

But this year, this conservative bit of Texas is shaping up as one of the many laboratories in which the Democratic Party is testing its new identity - and figuring out how to win.

In all likelihood, most of them.

Democrats need to gain 24 seats nationwide to retake the U.S. House of Representatives, a feat that would allow the party to block the Republican president's legislative agenda. With so many candidates, plenty of controversy, and just enough campaign dollars in the mix, it's hard to tell how this will turn out, but one of these people will be up against Culberson in the fall, so this won't be the last time focus is locked on this district this year.

Meanwhile, in California, the state Democratic Committee ensured an internal fight when it snubbed Sen. However, the number does not come close to the Republican votes which dominated in both midterm primaries.

Specifically, the bills would create state grant programs to make it easier for schools to hire armed police or mental health coordinators and pay for video cameras, secure doors or other improvements.

But the abundance of volunteers also comes with a reality check: The crowded primaries are giving the party's ideological divide a full public airing and could give party leaders less control over who carries the mantle in November. Registered voters may cast a ballot in either primary from year to year. It pits Angela Paxton, the wife of Attorney General Ken Paxton, against Phillip Huffines, the twin brother of state Sen. Meanwhile, several congressional races packed with candidates were expected to head to May runoffs. It's divided some of the most powerful players on the far right in Texas, not to mention two of the most well-known families in conservative circles. But voters in the Lone Star State have been voting for nearly two weeks already - and there's been a big surge in enthusiasm across the board. Van Taylor, R-Plano, who is running for Congress.

On the Democratic Ballot, Larry Lira is running for this position.

Republicans of all stripes have talked about picking a candidate among themselves and then sticking together to thwart wannabe speakers with bipartisan support.

Uncertainty runs deep about how exactly the primary will shake out. Either McCall or Negley will most likely face Roy in a runoff.

Whoever becomes the Democratic nominee will have a daunting task in trying to dislodge Abbott. Midway through the regular session in 2017, the governor more or less joined the lieutenant governor's side, but for all of their combined strength, the two couldn't force all of their pet issues through the House.
