CDC report maps ongoing opioid epidemic in the USA

The number of visits rose 30 percent across the country from July 2016 to September 2017. The state had more than 600 opioid deaths during the first nine months of 2017, a 5 percent decrease compared to that same period in 2016.

New data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests drug overdose deaths declined in some states - but not in Oklahoma.

In the Midwest alone, hospital visits for opioid overdoses rose 70 percent during that time, according to the March CDC report. Pennsylvania also is expanding a "warm-handoff" program that strives to steer overdose survivors into treatment.

"This fast-moving epidemic affects both men and women, and people of every age", Schuchat said.

The goal is to better understand, and improve the response to, the crisis that has made drug overdoses the leading cause of death for Americans under 50. The next most afflicted region is the West (40%), followed by the Northeast (21%), Southwest (20%) and Southeast (14%).

The greatest increases were noted in states in the Midwest region, including Wisconsin (109%), IL (66%), in (35%), OH (28%), and Missouri (21%).

The rate rose most in the Midwest - 70 percent, including a 65 percent hike in IL.

"We hope that it's a positive sign that will persist", she said.

"Up until now, we have been reporting on the tragic loss of life from overdoses, but for every fatal case, there are many more nonfatal cases, each one with its own emotional and economic toll", Schuchat said during a telebriefing on the report. Many more people come in with infections, withdrawal symptoms and complications from missing routine appointments like dialysis because they were busy getting high, he said.

Moreno said he has started conversations with community clinics about beginning medication-assisted treatment in Sinai's ER and then handing patients off for further rehab.

Opioids were involved in two-thirds of all overdose deaths in 2016.

"We wanted more timely information", Schuchat says.
