The mayor is being investigated for having an extramarital affair with her former bodyguard, Metro police Sgt. Robert Forrest, to which she admitted to back in January. But she stepped down March 6 and pleaded guilty to a theft charge, according to an Associated Press report.

District Attorney Glenn Funk argued that she had improperly used between $10,000 (£7,000) and $60,000 (£43,000) in city funds while carrying out an affair with the head of her security detail. More importantly, this lurch in the case from unlawful sex to unlawful use of public money put an end, for the time at least, to Barry's political career. However, investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations searched Forrest's phone and found photos of a nude woman (presumably Barry) taken during work hours.

Mayor Megan Barry says she won't resign as questions swirl over taxpayer-funded trips she took alone with her lover, including one to Greece; Steve Harrigan reports.

For the first time in almost 100 years, the mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, will leave office early.

The resignation means that Vice Mayor David Briley will become acting mayor.

Barry had been facing several investigations since the affair came to light.

A former at-large councilwoman elected in September 2015, Barry was a favorite among liberals, whose popularity only expanded after taking office.

Barry said the affair began in spring 2016 and refused to say when the affair ended, just that it had.

A special election to choose a new mayor will be held August 2. According to the newspaper, Forrest accompanied Barry on trips to Paris, Washington, New York, Denver, Oakland and other cities in the past year.

As part of a plea agreement, Barry agreed to reimburse the city $11,000 in restitution, resign as mayor and serve three years probation.

Barry's exit comes after she admitted January 31 to a almost two-year affair with Forrest, who retired that same day.

Before becoming mayor, Barry earned an MBA from Vanderbilt University and was an ethics and compliance officer in the telecommunications and health care industries.

There's never a good time for a sex/financial scandal, but it was particularly bad timing for Barry, whose signature public transportation initiative is going before Nashville voters in May.

The tweet also included a link to her entire statement regarding her resignation. She denied breaking the law, rebuffed calls for her resignation, and said her husband remained committed to their marriage.
