James Collins, the West Ham defender, and Burnley striker Ashley Barnes clashed with fans who had invaded the pitch, while police said they had received two allegations of assault.

Referee Lee Mason even consulted Hammers boss David Moyes and Burnley manager Sean Dyche over abandoning the game as the away team allowed kids in their dugout to escape the fighting.

The match, which saw Burnley win 3-0 at London Stadium on Saturday, was marred by a series of pitch invasions, West Ham captain Mark Noble confronting one of the individuals and knocking him to the ground.

Stewards arrived at the scene to escort the duo from the field, though trouble continued in the stands.

"But the rule is that you can not come on to the pitch - you're not allowed".

"There is no place at any level of the game for what happened at the London Stadium", the Premier League said.

While the Clarets have had a year to forget so far, they picked up their first win of 2018 last weekend, coming from behind to clinch victory for the first time this season. "You know, the players had gone a goal down, we want them to keep their focus".

"I've said it all along, Joe's been good, and I've got competition in some places so you have to play well". We didn't do so well for a couple of minutes in the second half. I wouldn't use that as an excuse for me after it, but I certainly don't think it helped. Having tried to play a 3-4-3 formation in recent games, Moyes is expected to stick with this tactic but should see Antonio return to the side and may prefer to play Marko Arnautović at the tip of attack to provide more presence than Javier Hernández who finds himself too isolated in this formation. Am I happy with the goals we conceded? We need to play better for longer periods in the game.

"Joe made a mistake - we can't dress that up in any different way", added Moyes.

"We scored a top goal, a great pass from Matt Lowton and a fine lay-off [by Wood]".

He has told the board that he will want to make major changes to the squad if he stays, with as many as 10 players leaving. The players have been really good in the main, I think the players have been really good.
