Pilot in deadly NYC helicopter crash called 'mayday,' cited engine failure

The official said it was not clear exactly when yellow inflatable pontoons on the helicopter began inflating and why they did not keep the helicopter afloat.

Two of the three victims in critical condition were sent to Bellevue Hospital in NY without heartbeats and were not expected to live, while the third was rushed to Langone Hospital.

The owner, Liberty Helicopters, referred all inquiries to federal authorities.

The company has not yet responded to requests for comment.

NY 1 television, citing police sources, reported that five of the six people flying in the helicopter had died, with only the pilot surviving.

While some people say there was more than one person aboard, other witnesses say only one individual was inside and was able to escape unscathed.
