Walmart announced Wednesday plans to expand its grocery delivery service to more than 40 percent of US households by the end of the year. Based on the language used in today's press release, it sounds as if Walmart will be expanding its use of these services rather than hiring more of its own delivery drivers.

With the help of Walmart's personal shoppers and crowd-sourced delivery services, the retailer will be able to shop for and deliver fresh groceries to the doorsteps of millions of Americans. "We know organics are important to our Online Grocery customers", said a spokesperson in an email.

According to the Wall Street Journal article, Walmart also will look at using its ecommerce subsidiary to offer fast grocery delivery in New York City and other metro areas where Walmart lacks a presence.

To order, customers will go to or the Walmart Grocery app to build an online basket, place order and select delivery time. During a media call yesterday, Tom Ward, Walmart's vice president of digital operations, said in delivery test markets such as Dallas and San Jose, California, the company gained shoppers outside its normal store coverage area. Since Amazon's Whole Foods acquisition, the ecommerce giant has made an aggressive play for the grocery market - Walmart's most profitable category.

Some of the benefits of the Walmart grocery delivery service include the ability to have items show up the same day customers order them.

The Walmart delivery service costs $9.95 per order and requires a $30 minimum purchase. Customers can also order groceries - and use the promo code - through the retailer's app. "This expansion is just adding the concept of delivery to the process that already existed".

Walmart is making a major push into online grocery delivery. The move comes as rivals Amazon, Kroger and Target are all investing in the increasingly popular service. Whole Foods also now offers delivery through Instacart, which ships groceries for Kroger, Acme and Costco, too.Target late a year ago bought online grocery delivery startup Shipt for $550 million, adding to the competition.

Instacart delivers groceries from 441 of the retailer's 519 USA warehouses and the service will be rolled out to the remaining locations by the end of 2018.
