The moves by the Trump legal team came just a day after it was reported that CBS's "60 Minutes" interview with Clifford and her attorney will air March 25.

Adult film star and exotic dancer Stormy Daniels was physically threatened and warned to remain silent about her relationship with US President Donald Trump, her lawyer has told US media outlets.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the President have claimed in court papers filed by his lawyers on Friday that the actress could be up for damages of at least $US20 million ($26 million) for breaching a confidentiality agreement she had with Mr Trump's lawyers.

Asked about Mr. Avenatti's allegation relating to threats on Friday, the president's press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said she had "no knowledge" about it, but "obviously we take the safety and security of any person seriously".

Clifford filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles last week that sought to invalidate the agreement so she could "set the record straight" and has offered to return the $130,000 she was paid for agreeing not to discuss the relationship.

Her complaint argues the deal is invalid because Mr Trump did not sign it. Cohen has not explained why he made the payment and has not said if Trump was aware of it.

Trump formally joined his legal team's response to Clifford's suit in a motion, filed on Friday, to move the case from state court in Los Angeles, where Clifford filed her claim, to federal court. They are now attempting to remove this case in order to increase their chances that the matter will ultimately be decided in private arbitration, behind closed doors, outside of public view and scrutiny.

Ravens reach deal with WR Crabtree

Lawyers for Trump claim Daniels - whose real name is Stephanie Clifford - could owe more than £14m in damages for violating the agreement.

Michael Cohen, a private lawyer for Trump, has said he paid Daniels $130,000 of his own money during the 2016 presidential election campaign.

Despite the newly-bolstered legal firepower aimed at his client, Avenatti said he is "not going to stand for" attempts by Trump to "gag and muzzle" Daniels' telling of the affair.

"And the White House has refused to say how involved Mr Trump had even been in the initial agreement with Ms Clifford, signed in October 2016", the Times noted. He said, however, that he had not vetted their claims.

"The fact that a sitting president is pursuing over $20M in bogus "damages" against a private citizen, who is only trying to tell the public what really happened, is remarkable".

According to U.S. News & World Report, six other women have been in touch with Avenatti, with two of the women showing him signed nondisclosure agreements.
