White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said on Tuesday that there are no specific plans at the moment for U.S. President Donald Trump to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, fresh from a re-election victory that some U.S. lawmakers have called a sham.

Putin, who has been president or prime minister since 1999, won more than 76 percent of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission.

The Kremlin said Tuesday's conversation between the two leaders had been broadly constructive and focused on overcoming problems in relations, which are at a post-Cold War low.

Trump's decision Tuesday to ignore his advisers' guidance and congratulate Putin adds another layer to an emerging portrait in which the U.S. president has demonstrated a reluctance to confront the Russian leader amid an ongoing investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the 2016 election in his favor.

Moscow and Washington are at odds over Ukraine and Syria, while USA allegations that Russian Federation interfered in the US presidential election, something Moscow denies, continue to cast a shadow over ties.

Meanwhile, a almost yearlong investigation into possible collusion between the Kremlin and Trump's campaign team stretches on.

Trump's predecessor President Barack Obama called Putin after his last election win in 2012. "We will never allow anybody to have anything close to what we have". Other issues that will be discussed during the bilateral meeting will be Ukraine, Syria, and North Korea, Trump added. Russia's backing for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the scandal around meddling in the USA election, has further damaged its ties with worldwide actors.

Sanders was pressed on Trump's call with Putin, but said that the White House believes maintaining a relationship with Putin is worth it, despite some outstanding issues. "It didn't come up on today's call".

McCain, the Armed Services Committee chairman, also says that by doing so Trump has "insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country's future".

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Tuesday that he doesn't consider Trump's silence an "unfriendly move".

President Donald Trump says he wants to meet with Russia's Vladimir Putin in the "not too distant future" to discuss the "arms race" between Russian Federation and the U.S.

The U.K. criticized the conduct of the election amid rising tensions after it blamed a nerve-agent attack on Russian Federation, which denies involvement.
