Bumgarner underwent successful surgery Saturday to fix his fractured fifth metacarpal, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

A source tells ESPN's Buster Olney that the left-hander will be sidelined six to eight weeks. Bumgarner, making his final tuneup before his scheduled Opening Day start, was struck by a hard shot off the bat of the Royals' Whit Merrifield in the third inning.

This comes on the heels of reports that Jeff Samardzija will start the regular season on the disabled list with an injury of his own.

Following six consecutive seasons with 10 wins or more, over 200 innings pitched and 30 or more starts, Bumgarner was 4-9 with an ERA of 3.32 in just 17 starts in 2017.
