"All of Iceland's closest allies and partners have chose to take measures against Russian Federation in the wake of the Salisbury attack, including the Nordic countries, most member states of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as well as several European Union nations", the statement, published on the website of Iceland's government, reads.

"The boycott of the World Cup is one of the further actions that could be taken in relation to this matter".

In the wake of the decision to expel two Russian intelligence officers posing as diplomats in Australia, the Turnbull government has now revealed it is seriously considering boycotting the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Australia also said it would also expel two Russian diplomats in response to the incident that the British government has blamed on Moscow.

The British government has accused the Kremlin of organizing the March 4 attack, which is thought to have exposed as many as 130 people to the nerve agent, and announced shortly thereafter said that members of the Royal Family - including Prince William, president of the English Football Association - would not be attending the World Cup.

The foreign minister, in her joint-media release stated: "Together with the United Kingdom and other allies and partners, Australia is taking action in response to the recent nerve agent attack in Salisbury, UK".
