The latest transition builds on earlier efforts to unite engineers who work on software with those that oversee hardware.

The second team Microsoft is creating as part of the reorganization concentrates on artificial intelligence and cloud-based technologies, he said. AI + Research, or AI + R in Microsoft for short, grew by 60 percent in the first year - from 5,000 people originally to almost 8,000 people - through hiring and acquisitions, and by bringing aboard additional teams from other parts of the company.

Elsewhere, Scott Guthrie will add to his existing duties and lead a new team focused on Cloud + AI Platform.

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella today announced a series of major organizational changes that will restructure the company's efforts in several key areas. In the most recent quarter, its Azure business grew 98 percent and its cloud-based Office 365 offering by 41 percent.
