The Ravens signed Griffin to a one-year deal Wednesday morning.

Griffin will compete for the backup job behind Flacco, replacing unrestricted free agent Ryan Mallett.

Griffin will likely be the second quarterback on the depth chart for the Ravens; behind Joe Flacco and ahead of third-year quarterback, Josh Woodrum. He played five games with the Browns before injuries caught up with him again, leading to his benching and, eventually, his release. He turned 28 in February.

"I felt like (Griffin) really wanted to be here".

Griffin had been a shooting star for the Redskins after being the No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft, taking a woebegone franchise to the playoffs in his rookie season.

ESPN's Jamison Hensley tweeted that Griffin "was initially brought in by the Ravens to throw to some receivers during a workout". Newsome also said Griffin's signing would not affect the team's plans to take a quarterback in the upcoming draft. "We felt like we needed another No. 2 quarterback".

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said Griffin worked out with the team last week and will likely head to Baltimore early next week to sign the contract.

But next season he sustained a knee sprain during a game against the Ravens, and came off for Kirk Cousins.

But Griffin, who had a history of injuries in college, reinjured his knee in the NFC wild-card-game loss to the Seattle Seahawks and underwent surgery on both his LCL and ACL. I really feel that way.

The #Ravens almost signed RGIII previous year and maintained interest throughout. But at this point, we just want him to stay healthy. RGIII won Offensive Rookie of the Year over Andrew Luck, tossing for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 102.4 QB rating while adding 120 rushing attempts, 815 yards and seven running scores. "It makes us a better football team". I believe our players are going to love the fact that he's here.
