Coalition spokesman Col. Turki al-Malki said the attack occurred at 1:30 p.m. (10:30 GMT) in global waters west of the port of Hodeida in Yemen, which is under Houthi control.

An attack by Yemen's Houthi insurgents on a Saudi oil tanker would have no impact on oil supplies, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said on Wednesday.

Col al-Malki described it as a "terrorist attack" that threatens ships entering the vital Bab al-Mandeb strait, used for oil shipments from the Gulf to Europe.

"The United States is very concerned about the Houthis' latest attempt to escalate the war in Yemen, this time by attacking a commercial vessel while it transited one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, the Bab al-Mandab, in global waters", the release said.

Saudi Arabia is leading a mostly Arab military coalition to fight Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015.

The war has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians, and displaced over 3 million, according to humanitarian agencies.

"But that shouldn't absolve or change the subject from the Saudi-led coalition's primary responsibility for Yemen's humanitarian crisis due to its blockade and repeated bombing of Yemeni civilians and critical Yemeni infrastructure", Roth wrote in an email. Saudi Arabia has repeatedly accused Iran of supplying the rebels with missiles and other arms, accusations denied by Tehran. Last week, a missile attack killed an Egyptian worker and wounded two others in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Following three years of armed conflict, 75 percent of the population, 22.2 million people, are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.

The United Nations raised more than $2 billion on Tuesday to help civilians in Yemen, with half the funds pledged by governments that are bombarding the war-ravaged country.

The one-day conference co-hosted by Sweden, Switzerland and the United Nations collected pledges totaling $2.01 billion from 40 countries and organizations.
