However, if a storm gains notoriety because of its strength, number of deaths or damage, the WMO may retire that name from future use.

There have been 86 names retired from the Atlantic basin since storms began receiving names in 1953.

The deadly 2005 season was the highest year on record with five retired names.

Harvey, a Category 4 hurricane that hit Texas with winds of 132 miles per hour, killed 68 people and dumped historic amounts of rain on Houston.

The last names dropped from the list were 2016 storms: Matthew and Otto. When it hit Puerto Rico, it was still a Category 4, and the strongest storm to hit the US territory since 1928.

The 2017 hurricane season was record-shattering, fueled by abnormally warm ocean water and a particularly conducive weather pattern over the Atlantic.

Hurricane Irma was a long-lived hurricane that reached category 5 intensity on September 5.

Maria was blamed for 31 direct deaths in Dominica (with 34 missing), two deaths in Guadeloupe and 65 in Puerto Rico, according to the WMO. The catastrophic hurricane made seven landfalls, four of which occurred as a category 5 hurricane across the northern Caribbean Islands.
