Black flags protest continues, 'Modi go back' chants echo in TN

Black flags and huge black balloons flew high on the sky with a clear message written on them, asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "go back'".

Protesters assembled outside the Chennai airport a few minutes before the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai to inaugurate the DefExpo 2018.

As the Prime Minister's convoy passed through the campus to reach the adjacent Cancer Institute in Adyar, students wearing black shirts displayed placards condemning the Union government's higher education policies. A giant hot air balloon, also in black with "Go Back Modi" printed on it, was flown atop the house of former Chennai Mayor Ma Subramanian in Saidapet in Chennai.

TNM also reports that a black flag has been hoisted at DMK Chief M Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram residence and MK Stalin's residence.

Modi to Protest Parliament Disruption With April 12 Fast

Ahead of Modi's arrival at the airport here around 9 AM, protestors began congregating at several locations in groups in its vicinity.

The reason for the protests was the failure of the Central government in forming Cauvery Management board to overlook sharing of the river's water between Karnataka and Tamilnadu despite an order from the Supreme court. Following persuasion by police and Bharathiraja, they climbed down and were detained by police.

Delegations from countries like, US, the UK, Russia, Afghanistan and Sweden, Finland, Italy, Madagascar, Myanmar, Nepal, Portugal, Seychelles and Vietnam and going to be present during the expo.

Veteran film director Bharathiraja of the Peravai confirmed participation in the black flag demonstration.

Traffic snarls were witnessed around the airport and in its surrounding areas due to the protests.
