Friday marked the third large-scale protest near the border fence since late March.

The five representatives issued a statement urging Palestinians to demonstrate nonviolently and Israeli soldiers "to refrain from shooting live ammunition at unarmed Palestinian protesters from hundreds of meters away, across the fence separating the two territories". The rioters also threw explosives and rocks toward the Israeli side of the border and attempted to fly a kite over to the Israeli side that had a firebomb attached to it.

Conricus told The Associated Press that the army is trying to "minimize" Palestinian casualties, but that open-fire regulations have not changed. "Media reports suggest that on Friday, Israeli soldiers will once again be ordered by high command - in contravention of global law - to engage in sniper fire on Gaza residents who come within 300 meters of the border fence or engage in other non-life-threatening actions". Since late March, 27 Palestinians were killed in protests. They also dismantled a number of barbed wire fences deployed at about 20 metres from the perimeter fence by the Israeli military, and attempted to breach the latter.

"The Israeli authorities must put an immediate end to the excessive and lethal force being used to suppress Palestinian demonstrations in Gaza", Amnesty International said Friday.

The ministry said 419 of them were moved to hospitals and medical centers, and 550 received treatment in field clinics and makeshift hospitals near border areas.

The first two Fridays saw tens of thousands gather at five locations along the border with Israel.
