US lawmakers late on Friday reacted to the USA -led airstrikes against Syria's chemical weapons facilities ordered by President Donald Trump earlier in the evening. "We can not take such risks", said Dvorkovich, speaking at a forum.

White said the US does not seek conflict with Syria but "cannot allow such grievous violations of global law" and attacks on innocent Syrians.

French President Emmanuel Macron and British PM Theresa May also confirmed that United Kingdom and France have joined hands with the USA in carrying out an attack on Syria.

Trump ordered the launch of air strikes on Syria in retaliation to the alleged chemical attacks by President Bashar al-Assad.

President Trump declared "mission accomplished" Saturday after USA military forces carried out missile strikes with Britain and France against Syrian chemical-weapons facilities.

"As always, we oppose the use of force in global relations and call for respect for other countries' sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity", a spokesperson for the Chinese government said.

Asked what chemicals were used in the weekend attack, Mattis confirmed that chlorine gas had been used and did not rule out the nerve agent sarin. According to reports, after determining that Assad's government used sarin gas on citizens, United States had attacked Syria. The governments of both Iran and Russian Federation released statements condemning the airstrikes and promising responses.

"Without the authorization of the United Nations Security Council, in defiance of the UN Charter, norms and principles and global law, an act of aggression has been committed against a sovereign state, which is at the forefront of the war on terror", the Kremlin press service quotes Putin as saying.

In an address to the American people on Friday, Trump called out Russian Federation and Iran for supporting Assad's regime.

Pentagon officials said the attacks targeted the heart of Assad's programs to develop and produce chemical weapons.

The U.S. president, who has tried to build good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, had sharply critical words for Russia and Iran, which have backed Assad's government.

"None of our aircraft or missiles involved in this operation were successfully engaged by Syrian air defenses and we have no indication that Russian air defense systems were employed", McKenzie said.

"To Iran and Russian Federation, I ask you: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?" he said. Trump called the mission "accomplished".

He criticized Russia's support of the Syrian regime saying "Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path".

In a statement following the strikes, Anatoly Antonov, Russian ambassador to the USA, said Moscow's "warnings have been left unheard".

The minister further stated that, "On the question of chemical weapons, there is a red line that must not be crossed, and if it should be crossed again, there will be another intervention".
